Bill Wight tossed a one-hitter as the 1948 Chicago White Sox advanced to the championship game of the 100-Loss Tournament with a 2-0 victory over the 1955 Washington Senators.
Chicago will travel to face the winner of the other semifinal contest that has 1962 New York Mets visiting the 1981 San Diego Padres.
Wight had retired eight in a row when Jose Valdivielso singled in the third for the only hit the Senators could muster against the White Sox hurler.
The only other blemish for Wight was a one-out walk to Mickey Vernon in the fourth frame. After Vernon reached, Wight sent down 17 straight to end the affair.
The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth when Luke Appling‘s RBI single off Washington starter Dean Stone gave the White Sox a 1-0 advantage.
Appling also produced the other tally for the White Sox in the seventh with a solo homer off Stone. Taffy Wright followed with a double sending Stone to the showers.
Pedro Ramos took over on the mound and held the White Sox in check, but Washington couldn’t challenge the effort from Wight.
