Strat Madness: Babe Ruth Bracket Championship

Bris Lord was a member of the 1910 and 1911 world champion Philadelphia A’s.

The 1911 A’s advanced to the Press Room Pass Strat Madness Tournament semifinals to face the winner of the Tony Perez Bracket contest featuring the (1) 1975 Reds and (2) 1905 Giants.

Bris Lord‘s run-scoring single in the top of the ninth gave the Philadelphia A’s a 4-3 win over the New York Yankees. The A’s took a 2-0 lead in the fourth on a two-run single by Ira Thomas.

In the bottom of the fourth, Lou Gehrig tied the game with a two-run blast before Joe Dugan‘s RBI single put the Yankees on top 3-2.

Danny Murphy tied the contest in the eighth as he knocked in a run with a single to set the stage for Lord’s game-winner.

Chief Bender worked eight innings to get the win, while Cy Morgan picked up a save with a perfect ninth. Herb Pennock took the loss.

IN REAL LIFE:

Bris Lord had a pair stints with Philadelphia in his eight-year career, while playing a role in the A’s two World Series victories in 1910 and 1911.

The 1911 season was probably the best for Lord. The Pennsylvania native batted .310 with three homers, 55 RBI and 15 stolen bases in a career-high 134 games.

Lord began his time in the big leagues with the A’s from 1905-1907. After a minor league season in New Orleans, Lord played with Cleveland in 1909-1910.

In July of 1910, Lord was traded back to the A’s from the Indians for Morrie Rath and a player to be named later. The player to be named ended up being Shoeless Joe Jackson.

After the 1912 season with the A’s, Lord finished his time in the majors with the Boston Braves in 1913 when he hit a career-best six homers.
