Jimmie Foxx blasted a pair of homers to send the Boston Red Sox to the second round of the 1938 Tournament with a 6-3 victory over the Brooklyn Dodgers.
The Red Sox trailed by a run heading into the bottom of the ninth inning.
After Brooklyn starter Freddie Fitzsimmons retired Gene Desautels, pinch-hitter Red Nonnenkamp singled before Doc Cramer walked.
At that point, Brooklyn manager Burleigh Grimes called Tot Pressnell from the bullpen and Joe Vosmik promptly singled to tie the affair at 3-3.
As the Red Sox faithful in Fenway Park were still enjoying the moment, Foxx drilled a three-run walk-off homer to send the crowd into a raucous celebration.
With the win, the Red Sox advance to entertain the Chicago White Sox in the second round.
Lefty Grove (1-0) went the distance on the mound for the Red Sox allowing just one earned run on 11 hits with three walks and five strikeouts.
Fitzsimmons (0-1) was tagged with the loss giving up four runs on seven hits with four walks and a pair of strikeouts. Pressnell didn’t get an out as he surrendered two runs on two hits.
The Dodgers opening the scoring in the top of the first with an unearned run as Buddy Hassett singled to make it 1-0.
Foxx hit a two-run shot in the sixth to give the Red Sox a 2-1 advantage.
The Dodgers were able to answer in the seventh with another unearned run as Hassett singled and Cramer misplayed the hit in centerfield that allowed Goody Rosen to score.
Brooklyn grabbed the lead in the eighth on a RBI single by Babe Phelps as the stage was set for the Boston comeback.
