The New York Yankees won their third World Series title during the 1938 season as part of a run of four straight championships.

New York swept the series from the Chicago Cubs in four games as Yankees legend Lou Gehrig played in his final post-season.

Johnny Vander Meer of the Cincinnati Reds was responsible for the top moment of the regular season as he threw back-to-back no-hitters in June against Boston and Brooklyn.

Reds catcher Ernie Lombardi was named the Most Valuable Player in the National League, while Boston first baseman Jimmie Foxx grabbed the same honor in the American League. Both players won batting titles as Lombardi hit .342 with Foxx topping both leagues at .349. Foxx also drove in 175 runs.

Other notable performances were by Detroit’s Hank Greenberg with 58 homers, Cleveland pitcher Bob Feller with 240 strikeouts and Chicago pitcher Bill Lee posting a major league leading 22 victories.

Although the Yankees easily won the World Series, there should be plenty of action in this single elimination tournament.
