Paul Derringer used his arm and his bat to lead the Cincinnati Reds to a 3-1 victory over the Washington Senators in the opening round of the 1938 Tournament.
With the win, the Reds are set to visit the New York Yankees for a second round affair.
Derringer (1-0) limited the Senators to five hits in his complete game effort with four walks and four strikeouts.
Washington’s run came in the top of the first when George Case and Buddy Lewis began the contest with singles. With Case at third, a sacrifice fly by Al Simmons put the Senators in front.
The advantage didn’t last as Lonny Frey doubled off Washington starter Dutch Leonard and then scored on a single by Ival Goodman to tie the game at 1-1.
In the seventh, Derringer came through at the plate to drive in two runs against Leonard.
Ernie Lombardi led off with a double and then moved to third on a single by Billy Myers. Derringer smacked a double to bring home Lombardi and Myers.
