Jim Bagby tossed a five-hitter as the Boston Red Sox blanked the Chicago White Sox 8-0 in the second round of the 1938 Tournament.
With the victory, the Red Sox are slated to entertain the Philadelphia A’s in the semifinals.
Bagby (1-0) had a pair of walks and a strikeout in his complete game effort with Marv Owen collecting two of the hits for the White Sox.
Boston’s offense took control of the affair with four runs in the bottom of the first against Chicago starter Thornton Lee.
Doc Cramer led off with a triple and then scored on a three-bagger by Jimmie Foxx. Joe Cronin and Ben Chapman followed with RBI singles and it was 4-0.
The Red Sox added another run in the second as Cramer doubled and came home on a single by Foxx.
In the sixth, Joe Vosmik doubled with one out before Foxx drove in his third run of the contest with a single.
Foxx also had a single in the fourth and another triple in the eighth to give him five hits on the day. After the second triple by Foxx, he scored on a fielder’s choice by Joe Cronin as he beat out a double play attempt by the White Sox.
Lee (0-1) gave up seven runs on a 12 hits with a walk and seven strikeouts by the time he left the mound with one out in the sixth.
Jack Knott worked the rest of the sixth and a scoreless seventh before Johnny Rigney took over in the eighth allowing the final tally by Boston.
