A pair of homers by Johnny Mize helped the New York Giants reach the second round of the 1948 Tournament.
The Giants beat the Philadephia A’s 6-1 to sweep the best of three series. New York plays the Chicago Cubs in the second round.
Mize got the action underway in the bottom of the first with a two-run homer off A’s starter Carl Scheib.
The score remained the same until the fifth when the Giants added an unearned run that Whitey Lockman drove in with a single to make it 3-0.
Mize led off the sixth with a solo shot, which marked the beginning of the end for Scheib. The A’s pitcher gave up singles by Walker Cooper and Bobby Thomson before Bubba Harris replaced Scheib.
Harris induced Don Mueller to hit into a double play, but Cooper was able to score to give the Giants a 5-0 advantage.
New York scored its last run in the eighth on a RBI single by Willard Marshall.
Giants starter Sheldon Jones tossed a complete game allowing six hits with three strikeouts.
Philadelphia picked up its only run against Jones in the ninth with a RBI single from Buddy Rosar.
