Editor’s note: The 1948 Tournament games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available. The first and second round series will be the best two of three games. The semifinals are best of five, while the championship series is the best of seven.
The Boston Braves continued to their offensive assault on the Detroit Tigers.
With a 15-hit attack, the Braves beat the Tigers 9-2 to sweep the best of three series to advance to the semifinals of the 1948 Tournament.
Boston now faces the winner of the Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Red Sox series. The semifinals are best of five.
Detroit ace Hal Newhouser (1-1) didn’t make it out of the fifth inning as he gave up 11 hits and seven runs.
Johnny Sain (2-0) went the distance for the Braves as he allowed eight hits with five strikeouts.
Earl Torgeson gave the Braves a 1-0 lead in the third as he knocked in a run on a fielder’s choice.
Both teams scored twice in the fourth as the Braves came away with a 3-2 advantage.
Phil Masi had a RBI triple for the Braves and teammate Eddie Stanky added a run-scoring single.
Sam Vico and Bob Swift had back-to-back RBI singles as the duo got the Tigers to within a run.
Boston took control in the top of the fifth with four runs. Al Dark had a RBI double before Tommy Holmes drove in a run with a single to end the day for Newhouser. The last run came home on a bases loaded walk by Ted Gray and it was 7-2.
Dark’s RBI triple in the ninth off Hal White and another run-scoring single by Stanky finished the scoring for the Braves.
Masi and Stanky each had four hits for the Braves.
