1948 Tournament: Braves at White Sox G2

Editor’s note: The 1948 Tournament games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available. The first and second round series will be the best two of three games. The semifinals are best of five, while the championship series is the best of seven.

Warren Spahn pitched the Boston Braves into the second round of the 1948 Tournament.

With a 5-0 win over the Chicago White Sox, the Braves swept the best of three series to advance to play the winner of the match-up of the Detroit Tigers and the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Spahn (1-0) went the distance allowing seven hits with five strikeouts.

A scoreless affair through three innings, the Braves took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth.

Bob Elliott drilled a solo homer off Chicago starter Joe Haynes, while Mike McCormick followed with a RBI single.

Elliott led off the sixth with another solo blast that made it 3-0.

Jim Russell capped the scoring for the Braves in the eighth with his second homer of the series, which was a two-run shot that sent Haynes (0-1) to the showers.

Taffy Wright and Cass Michaels led the White Sox with two hits apiece.
