Editor’s note: The 1948 Tournament games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available. The first and second round series will be the best two of three games. The semifinals are best of five, while the championship series is the best of seven.
Preacher Roe allowed just one hit as he led the Brooklyn Dodgers to a 5-0 victory over the St. Louis Browns in the opening round of the 1948 Tournament.
With the win, Brooklyn can wrap up the best of three series in the second contest as Rex Barney is scheduled to start for the Dodgers, while the Browns will have Cliff Fannin on the mound.
After Roe gave up a single to Sam Dente in the first inning, only three other Browns got on base. Jerry Priddy reached on a error in the second, while Whitey Platt walked in the third and Hank Arft was issued a free pass in the sixth.
Duke Snider provided the run that Roe needed with a sacrifice fly in the fourth.
Brooklyn broke the game open against Browns starter Fred Sanford in the eighth.
Gil Hodges began the outburst with a solo homer before a walk and an error set up Roy Campanella‘s three-run blast.
Campanella and Jackie Robinson led the Dodgers with two hits apiece.
