Harry Brecheen threw a three-hit shut out to give St. Louis a two games to one lead in the best of five semifinal series with the Chicago in the 1948 Tournament as the Cardinals beat the Cubs 4-0 in Wrigley Field.

The Cardinals will try to clinch the series and move onto the finals with Howie Pollet (1-1) on the mound in game four. Chicago has Bob Rush (1-1) getting the ball hoping to send the series to a fifth contest.

Brecheen (3-0) didn’t allow a hit until Peanuts Lowrey singled with two out in the sixth. The Cardinal hurler fanned nine without a walk. He gave up singles in the eighth to Phil Cavarretta and Hal Jeffcoat, but the Cubs couldn’t score.

Cubs starter Russ Meyer (1-2) was able to match Brecheen until the seventh inning when the Cardinals scored the first run of the contest on a RBI single by Stan Musial.

St. Louis sent Meyer to the showers in the ninth as the Cardinals put the game away with three runs.

Marty Marion had a RBI triple that was followed by a double by Enos Slaughter that made it 3-0. Musial capped the rally with a RBI single off Chicago’s Bob Chipman.

Slaughter topped the Cardinals with three hits, while Red Schoendienst, Marion and Musial had two hits each.
