1948 Tournament: Cardinals at Cubs G4

Editor’s note: The 1948 Tournament games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available. The first and second round series will be the best two of three games. The semifinals are best of five, while the championship series is the best of seven.

Howie Pollet was able to help the St. Louis Cardinals to eliminate the Chicago Cubs from the 1948 Tournament.

Pollet tossed a complete as the Cardinals beat the Cubs 6-2 at Wrigley Field to earn a ticket to the championship series.

St. Louis faces the Philadelphia Phillies for the title after both teams won their best of five semifinal series in four contests.

Enos Slaughter‘s RBI single in the first got the Cardinals on the scoreboard against Cubs starter Bob Rush.

Emil Verban tied the affair in the bottom of the second with a run-scoring single for the Cubs.

The Cardinals took the lead for good in the third on a RBI single by Marty Marion.

In the fourth, a bases loaded walk to Del Rice put the Cardinals on top 3-1.

Stan Musial led off the seventh with a solo homer as the Cardinals added to their margin.

Both teams scored in the ninth. Marion started the rally for the Cardinals with a double, which was his fourth hit of the game.

Musial’s single scored Marion before Nippy Jones added the final tally on a sacrifice fly.

Hal Jeffcoat knocked in Chicago’s last run as he beat out a double play attempt by the Cardinals that kept the Cubs alive.

Pollet (2-1) gave up eight hits with a walk and four strikeouts to get the win, while Rush (2-1) also went the distance for the Cubs.
