The semifinals are best of five, while the championship series is the best of seven.
There’s no place like home.
The Philadelphia Phillies responded to being at Shibe Park with an 8-5 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in the third game in the best of seven championship series of the 1948 Tournament.
Philadelphia looks to even the series with Schoolboy Rowe (2-1) on the mound in game four as the Cardinals counter with Murry Dickson (3-0). Both pitchers were starters in the opener of the series as the Cardinals won 11-5.
Robin Roberts (3-1) went the distance for the Phillies allowing nine hits with a pair of strikeouts, while St. Louis starter Howie Pollet (2-2) only lasted four innings.
Pollet’s struggles began in the first inning as he walked Richie Ashburn, who then swiped second and scored on a single by Harry Walker. Del Ennis followed with a RBI double and Andy Seminick‘s sacrifice fly made it 3-0.
The Cardinals picked up a run in the second on a RBI single by Don Lang.
Ashburn and Walker both knocked in runs in the bottom of the second as the Phillies built a 5-1 advantage.
A two-run homer by Stan Musial in the third got St. Louis back in the game, but Ennis answered with a three-run blast for the Phillies to deflate the spirt of the Cardinals making it 8-3.
Marty Marion‘s run-scoring single in the fifth and a solo shot by Lang in the seventh helped the cause for the Cardinals, but it wasn’t enough.
