1948 Tournament: Giants at Cubs G2

Editor’s note: The 1948 Tournament games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available. The first and second round series will be the best two of three games. The semifinals are best of five, while the championship series is the best of seven.

The Chicago Cubs made it to the semifinals of the 1948 Tournament with a 3-0 victory over the New York Giants.

With the sweep in the second round best of three series, the Cubs are set to face the winner of the St. Louis Cardinals and Brooklyn Dodgers matchup in the semifinals.

Hal Jeffcoat led the Chicago offense with a pair of solo homers of New York’s Larry Jansen in the second and fourth.

Bill Nicholson provided the other run for the Cubs in the eighth with a RBI double, which was his second two-bagger of the contest.

Russ Meyer (1-1) went the distance for the Cubs allowing six hits with two by New York’s Walker Cooper as he fanned six.

Jansen (1-1) worked eight frames for the Giants giving up seven hits with five strikeouts.
