There was plenty of offense as the St. Louis Cardinals opened the championship series of the 1948 Tournament with an 11-6 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.

The starting pitchers in game two of the best of seven battle features Harry Brecheen (3-0) of the Cardinals going against Dutch Leonard (3-0) of the Phillies.

A six-run sixth inning by St. Louis highlighted a 12-hit attack as the Cardinals broke the contest open.

Both teams got on the scoreboard in the first inning as the crowd settled into Sportsman Park.

The Phillies picked up a RBI single from Del Ennis, while Stan Musial hit a sacrifice fly for the Cardinals.

Philadelphia continued to tag St. Louis starter Murry Dickson as the Phillies added three runs in the top of the second.

Andy Seminick began the rally with a solo homer before run-scoring singles by Harry Walker and Eddie Miller to make it 4-1.

Ron Northey‘s homer off Phillies starter Schoolboy Rowe in the bottom of the second cut the Cardinals deficit to 4-2.

The Cardinals took the lead for good in the third with three runs. Nippy Jones drove in two with a triple and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Northey.

St. Louis put the game away with the outburst in the sixth.

After Jones and Northey singled, Don Lang had a RBI double to begin the onslaught and end the day for Rowe. Red Schoendienst added a two-run single against reliever Blix Donnelly before Marty Marion hit a sacrifice fly. Musial capped the rally with a two-run homer.

With the Cardinals leading 11-4, Dickson (3-0) stayed on the mound for a complete game despite struggling at times as he allowed a dozen hits with four walks and three strikeouts. The Phillies picked up their final runs in the ninth on a long ball by Ennis.

Rowe (2-1) gave up 10 hits and eight runs as he suffered the loss. Donnelly worked just one frame, while Monk Dubiel tossed the final pair of innings.
