Editor’s note: The 1948 Tournament games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available. The first and second round series will be the best two of three games. The semifinals are best of five, while the championship series is the best of seven.
After three straight wins at home, the Philadelphia Phillies claimed the title of the 1948 Tournament with a 6-3 victory in the sixth game of the best of seven championship series.
The Phillies built a 5-0 advantage as they took control of the contest by the fourth inning.
Philadephia scored twice in the second against St. Louis starter Howie Pollet (2-3). Willie Jones had a RBI single, which was followed by a bases loaded walk to Richie Ashburn.
In the fourth, Eddie Miller added to Philadelphia’s two-run single. Del Ennis capped the rally with a RBI single and the Phillies led by five as Pollet’s day came to an end.
Robin Roberts (4-1) was able to work through some control problems in the bottom of the fifth despite walking Bill Baker with the bases loaded as the Cardinals were only able to score once.
Del Rice added another run for the Cardinals with a RBI single off Roberts to cut the St. Louis deficit to 5-2.
An error ended the contest for Roberts as the Cardinals scored an unearned run before Monk Dubiel took over on the mound and retired the last five hitters to earn a save.
The Phillies added their final tally in the ninth. Al Brazle, who took over Pollet in the fifth, walked Harry Walker and gave up a single to Miller.
Ted Wilks was called from the bullpen, but and error allowed Walker to race home as the celebration began in the Phillies dugout.
