Editor’s note: The 1948 Tournament games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available. The first and second round series will be the best two of three games. The semifinals are best of five, while the championship series is the best of seven.

Another big swing from Del Ennis put Philadelphia in the semifinals of the 1948 Tournament as the Phillies beat the Boston Red Sox 4-3 to sweep the best of three series.

Philadephia will face the Boston Braves in the semifinals. Robin Roberts (1-0) gets the start in the opener of that five-game series for the Phillies, while Warren Spahn (1-0) is scheduled for the Braves.

Ted Williams gave the Red Sox an early 2-0 advantage with a homer off Philadelphia’s Dutch Leonard.

That long ball would be all of the offense until the bottom of the eighth as Boston’s Mel Parnell blanked the Phillies through seven frames.

After Parnell retired Granny Hamner, Willie Jones singled to begin the game-winning rally.

Richie Ashburn reached on an error and Eddie Miller singled to cut Philadelphia’s deficit to 2-1.

Ennis stepped into the batter’s box and changed the course of the Phillies with a three-run blast that put his team on top 4-2.

A RBI single in the top of the ninth finished the scoring for Boston with a single by Stephens.

Leonard (2-0) went the distance for the Phillies giving up six hits with three strikeouts.

Parnell (1-1) allowed seven hits in eight innings with three strikeouts.
