Editor’s note: The 1948 Tournament games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available. The first and second round series will be the best two of three games. The semifinals are best of five, while the championship series is the best of seven.
Harry Brecheen tossed a one-hitter as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Washington Senators 3-0 in the opening round of the 1948 Tournament.
Brecheen (1-0) allowed a single to Carden Gillenwater in the fourth as he fanned 10 as the Senators never posed a threat in the contest.
The Cardinals scored all of their runs in the first against Washington starter Ray Scarborough, who also had a complete game as he gave up eight hits.
Red Schoendienst led off with a single. After Marty Marion hit a fly ball to left, Enos Slaughter singled.
Stan Musial doubled to drive in the intial run and then Bill Baker hit a double to make it 3-0.
Scarborough gave up just four hits the rest of the way, but his teammates didn’t produce a baserunner after Bud Stewart walked with two outs in the sixth.
The Cardinals have a chance to sweep the best of three series as Howie Pollet gets the start in the second game, while Washington counters with Walt Masterson.
