The Philadelphia Phillies needed a big inning to to advance to the second round of the 1948 Tournament.

With four runs in the sixth, Philadelphia erased a deficit and went on to a 5-2 victory over the New York Yankees as the Phillies swept the best of three series.

Philadelphia will now face the winner of the Boston Red Sox and Cincinnati Reds series.

Phillies starter Robin Roberts allowed a run in the third and another in the fourth before his team’s offense went to work in the bottom of the sixth.

Yankees starter Allie Reynolds had given up three hits through five innings as he blanked the Phillies.

Harry Walker led off the inning with a ground out and ended the rally with a pop out, but in between, the Phillies got the job done to end the day for Reynolds.

Johnny Blatnik started the scoring with a RBI single. Granny Hamner knocked two more with a single. With the team’s third straight single, Willie Jones made it 4-2.

In the eighth, an error by the Yankees led to a bases loaded walk to Walker as Philadelphia scored its final tally against Spec Shea.

Tommy Henrich gave the Yankees a 1-0 lead in the third with a run-scoring single.

New York’s other run came in the fourth on a RBI single from Johnny Lindell.

Roberts (1-0) went the distance to get the win as he fanned four and walked two.
