Editor’s note: The 1950 Tournament games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available.
The 1953 Brooklyn Dodgers needed 12 innings to capture the championship with a 4-2 win over the 1950 Philadelphia Phillies in the 1950s Diamond Gems Tournament.
Roy Campanella and Gil Hodges drilled solo homers to lead off the 12th in Shibe Park against Philadelphia’s Bob Miller to provide the difference in the victory. Miller, who had worked a scoreless 11th, was able to finish the frame.
Tossing the 11th and 12th to pick up the win for Brooklyn, Jim Hughes gave up a single to Eddie Waitkus with two outs in the final inning before retiring Richie Ashburn to close out contest.
Brooklyn’s Preacher Roe and Philadelphia’s well-rested Jim Konstanty left the affair after 10 innings with the game tied at 2-2. Roe gave up seven hits with two walks and nine strikeouts, Konstanty allowed three hits walked two and fanned six.
The Dodgers had a pair of solo homers that produced their runs. Pee Wee Reese hit his in the top of the first before Duke Snider slammed one in the third.
Philadelphia picked up of its runs in the bottom of the fourth on a RBI triple by Dick Sisler and run-scoring single by Granny Hamner.
