Red Schoendienst knocked in both runs to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 2-0 victory over the Philadelphia A’s in the opening round of the 1951 Tournament.
With the win, the Cardinals will face the winner of the Pittsburgh Pirates at Cleveland Indians in the second round.
After St. Louis left the bases loaded in the first against Philadelphia starter Bobby Shantz, the Cardinals filled the bags again in the second. Schoendienst’s RBI single gave the Cardinals grabbed the lead.
The score remained the same until the bottom of the seventh when St. Louis starting pitcher Gerry Staley led off with a double and later raced home on a single by Schoendienst.
Staley (1-0) went the distance as he blanked the A’s on five hits with three walks and a strikeout.
Shantz (0-1) tossed eight innings giving up eight runs with five walks and a strikeout.
