The Chicago White Sox broke open a tight game by scoring times in the seventh inning on the way to an 8-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs at Comiskey Park.

With the game tied at 4-4, Cubs starter Sam Jones walked the first three hitters to begin the frame.

Cubs manager Stan Hack called Hal Jeffcoat in from the bullpen. It didn’t help as he walked Chico Carrasquel to bring home the go-ahead run for the White Sox.

Nellie Fox followed with a two-run single and Minnie Minoso knocked in the final tally on a ground out.

Virgil Trucks went the distance for the White Sox giving up eight hits with six strikeouts, while retiring the last nine hitters to preserve the victory.

The White Sox grabbed an early lead as Jim Rivera‘s RBI single in the third made it 1-0.

A solo homer in the top of fourth by Dee Fondy tied the contest at 1-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, the White Sox answered with three runs. Carrasquel had a two-run single before Rivera walked with the bases loaded to make it 4-1.

The Cubs were able to bounce back. Ted Tappe had a RBI single in the fifth and Walker Cooper added a two-run blast in the sixth to tie it at 4-4.

The White Sox entertain the Baltimore Orioles in a second round affair in Chicago.

1955 IN REAL LIFE: Carrasquel made his fourth and final all-star game appearance for the White Sox in 1955. He finished with 11 homers, 52 RBI and a .256 batting average.

After six seasons with the White Sox from 1950 to 1955, Carrasquel was traded to Cleveland with Jim Busby for for future Hall of Fame member Larry Doby. His career ended in 1959 after playing for the Kansas City A’s and Orioles.
