A 17-hit attack propelled the Chicago White Sox to a 10-4 victory over Cincinnati in the second round of the Strat-O-Matic 1959 Tournament presented by Press Room Pass.
Jim McAnany and Nellie Fox led the White Sox with four hits each, while Larry Doby finished with three hits.
After the Reds went on top 2-0 in the first inning on a solo homer by Frank Robinson and a run-scoring single by Jerry Lynch, the White Sox got to work in the bottom of the second.
Luis Aparicio knocked in two runs to tie with a single and Fox added a third run with a single to put the White Sox in front.
Lynch blasted a homer in the top of the fourth to tie it at 3-3 to send Cincinnati starter Jim Brosnan to the showers, but Chicago responded to take the lead for good in the bottom of the frame.
McAnany made it 4-3 with a RBI single before Sherm Lollar knocked in a pair with a single.
Doby, McAnany and Fox had RBI singles in the fifth against Joe Nuxhall, who didn’t retire a batter. Lollar added a sacrifice fly against Tom Aker and the White Sox led 10-3.
Robinson ended the scoring for the Reds with a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
Bob Shaw went the distance for Chicago despite allowing 11 hits as he struck out seven.

IN REAL LIFE:
Jim McAnany played parts of five seasons in Chicago from 1958 to 1962.
McAnany’s best year was 1959 as he played in 67 games and batted .276 with 27 RBI for the White Sox, who lost in the World Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers. He appeared in three games in the series, but didn’t get a hit.
His top performance of 1959 came in a doubleheader at Kansas City on July 4. In the opener, he had four hits with a pair of doubles and two RBI in a 7-4 victory. In the second contest, he added two more hits and knocked in a run in an 8-3 loss. He also had a three-hit game in Boston as the White Sox won 4-3.
Defensively, he topped the American League in double plays by a right fielder with four.
After his third season with the White Sox, McAnany was picked by the Los Angeles Angels in the expansion draft. He never played for the Angels as he was traded to the Chicago Cubs before the 1961 season started and was just 18 more games in the majors before retiring a year later.
