The 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates opened the second round of the 1960s Diamond Gems Tournament with a 4-2 victory over the 1961 New York Yankees.

New York grabbed an early advantage as Yogi Berra smacked a two-run homer off Pittsburgh starter Bob Friend in the second inning at Yankee Stadium.

Dick Stuart drilled a solo homer in the fourth off Ralph Terry as the Pirates began their comeback.

In the fifth, Dick Groat‘s two-run single gave the Pirates the lead for good. Bill Mazeroski hit a homer in the seventh for Pittsburgh’s final tally.

Friend (1-0) got the win as he gave up seven hits with a walk and eight strikeouts before leaving the mound after Elston Howard‘s single that started the bottom of the ninth for the Yankees. Roy Face took over for Friend and coaxed Bill Skowron to hit into a double play before he retired Berra on a fly ball to earn the save.

Terry (0-1) tossed seven innings as he surrendered eight hits with two strikeouts. Luis Arroyo finished with two scoreless frames for the Yankees.
