One big inning made the difference as the 1967 Boston Red Sox beat the 1965 Los Angeles Dodgers 9-5 to move on to the semifinals of the 1960s Diamond Gems Tournament.

The Red Sox will face the winner of the 1966 Baltimore Orioles at 1967 St. Louis Cardinals contest.

After Jerry Adair gave Boston a 1-0 lead with a RBI single in the fifth, the Red Sox exploded against Los Angeles starter Don Drysdale in the top of the sixth to silence the Dodger Stadium crowd as 13 hitters took swings at three different pitchers.

Drysdale couldn’t retire a batter as he was ousted after back-to-back run-scoring singles by George Scott and Rico Petrocelli. Jim Brewer couldn’t slow down the Red Sox as Boston starting pitcher John Wyatt hit a sacrifice fly that made it 4-0.

Joe Foy followed with a single to knock in two runs and Carl Yastrzemski drove in the sixth tally of the frame with a single that ended the day for Brewer. Bob Miller would eventually get the final out after the final run of the inning scored on an error as Boston led 8-0.

Los Angeles got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth as Maury Wills tripled and came home on a single by Jim Gilliam. Foy’s single in the top of the seventh off Miller plated last run for the Red Sox.

The Dodgers came to life in the as they finally got to Wyatt in the seventh with four runs. Wills drove in a pair with a single before Gilliam’s sacrifice fly. Dan Osinski took over for Wyatt and the last run for the Dodgers was produced as Ron Fairly grounded into a force play.

Lee Stange wrapped up things on the mound for Boston, while Johnny Podres and Howie Reed each tossed a scoreless for the Dodgers.
