1960s Diamond Gems Tournament: 61 Reds at 69 Mets

Editor’s note: The 1960 Tournament games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available.

Tom Seaver‘s dominate performance led the 1969 New York Mets to a 3-0 opening round victory over the 1961 Cincinnati Reds in the 1960s Diamond Gems Tournament.

Perfect through the first three innings in Shea Stadium, Seaver (1-0) allowed three hits with a walk and eight strikeouts in blanking the Reds.

Tommie Agee got the Mets on the scoreboard leading off the third with a solo homer off Reds starter Jim O’Toole.
After O’Toole walked three batters to begin the bottom of the fourth, Jerry Grote‘s single put the Mets on top 2-0. New York’s final tally came in the eighth on a RBI single by Ken Boswell.

O’Toole (0-1) took the loss for the Reds working seven innings giving up five hits with five walks and six strikeouts. Bill Henry tossed the eighth as he surrendered three hits and a run.
