Jerry Koosman threw a five-hitter as the 1969 New York Mets advanced to the semifinals of the 1960s Diamond Gems Tournament with a 3-0 victory of the 1968 St. Louis Cardinals at Shea Stadium.
Koosman (1-0) fanned six and walked one as he worked out of jams in the third and fifth innings as two runners reached base for the Cardinals.
St. Louis starter Nelson Briles blanked the Mets until the sixth as Bud Harrelson led off with a single before Cleon Jones made it to first base with an infield hit.
After St. Louis manager Red Schoendienst visited the mound in an attempt to calm his young hurler, Donn Clendenon ended the day for Briles as he hammered a three-run homer that proved to be all of the Mets offense for the contest.
Briles (0-1) gave up seven hits with five strikeouts before Ron Willis finished the sixth and added a scoreless seventh. Larry Jaster worked the eighth for the Cardinals.
