1960s Diamond Gems Tournament Preview

Editor’s note: The 1960 Tournament games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available.

The 1960s started with a big swing from Bill Mazeroski in the world series as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the New York Yankees in an exciting seventh game, while the decade ended with the amazing performance of the New York Mets as they defeated the Baltimore Orioles in 1969.

In between, Roger Maris hammered 61 homers for the New York Yankees, Sandy Koufax threw four no-hitters for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Bob Gibson won seven straight world series contests with the St. Louis Cardinals, Boston’s Carl Yastrzemski won the American League triple crown and Detroit’s Denny McLain won 31 games in 1968 and remains the last pitcher to reach that plateau for victories.

It’s going to be difficult to pick a winner in this 16-team bracket for the 1960s Diamond Gems Tournament. Should be fun to find out which team will be the champion!
