Editor’s note: The 1964 Tournament games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available.
Joe Pepitone made the hometown fans happy with his three-run homer in the eighth inning, which gave the New York Yankees a 3-0 victory over the Los Angeles Angels in the 1964 Tournament.
With the win, the Yankees are scheduled to entertain the winner of the Detroit Tigers at Chicago White Sox contest in the semifinals.
Fred Newman had blanked the Yankees for seven innings before New York came to life in the eighth. Roger Maris had a single with one out before Mickey Mantle walked.
After Newman fanned Tom Tresh, Pepitone’s long ball put the Yankees on top.
Newman (0-1) was tagged with the loss allowing seven hits in his eight innings on the mound with two walks and a pair of strikeouts.
Jim Bouton (1-0) went the distance for the Yankees as he limited the Angels to three hits with two walks and nine strikeouts.
Willie Smith had all three of the hits for Los Angeles with a single in the first, double in the third and another single in the sixth.
