1964 Tournament: Dodgers at Braves

Editor’s note: The 1964 Tournament games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available.

Lee Maye capped a ninth inning rally with a walk-off single as the Milwaukee Braves defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-4 in the second round of the 1964 Tournament.

With the victory, Milwaukee advances to the quarterfinals as the Braves travel to St. Louis to meet the Cardinals.

Trailing 4-1 against Dodgers starter Sandy Koufax, Hank Aaron led off the bottom of the ninth with a double before Joe Torre drove him home with a single.

Rico Carty‘s double ended the day for Koufax as the Braves had runners at second and third.

Los Angeles manager Walter Alston called Ron Perranoski from the bullpen, but the Braves were already rolling offensively.

Ed Bailey greeted the lefty with a RBI single and then Denis Menke walked to load the bases. Pinch-hitter Felip Alou tied the affair with a sacrifice fly.

Sandy Alomar singled and then Perranoski retired Eddie Mathews before Maye got the job done for the Braves.

Clay Carroll (1-0) picked up the win in relief of Braves starter Tony Cloninger. Carroll gave up a hit in the ninth, but fanned three as he got the final three outs. Cloninger allowed four runs on six hits with three walks and seven strikeouts when he left with one out in the eighth.

Perranoski (0-1) was tagged with the loss as he gave up three hits and the winning run in the ninth. Koufax worked eight innings allowing six hits with a pair of walks with 10 strikeouts.

Dodgers Build Lead

Nate Oliver‘s sacrifice fly in the second inning put the Dodgers on top before Tommy Davis smashed a solo homer in the fourth to make it 2-0.

Cloninger’s sacrifice fly cut Milwaukee’s deficit to 2-1 before the Dodgers added two more runs to add to their advantage. Tommy Davis had a run-scoring single in the sixth, while Willie Davis added a RBI double in the eighth,
