Bob Gibson tossed a four-hitter as the St. Louis Cardinals broke open a tight contest to win 10-0 over the Pittsburgh Pirates in the second round of the 1964 Tournament.
Gibson (1-0) went the distance as he walked three and fanned five as the Cardinals advanced to the third round to entertain the winner of the Los Angeles Dodgers at Milwaukee Braves affair.
An error led to the Cardinals putting a pair of unearned runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Pittsburgh starter Bob Friend had blanked the Cardinals on two hits heading into the sixth when Curt Flood reached on an error to begin the rally. Lou Brock followed with a single that put Flood on third.
After Friend was able to retire Dick Groat and Ken Boyer, Bill White smacked a single to give the Cardinals a 2-0 advantage.
In the seventh, St. Louis sent 12 batters to the plate and put the game away with eight runs against three pitchers.
Julian Javier and Tim McCarver had back-to-back singles off Friend, while Gibson grounded into a fielder’s choice with Javier getting cut down at home.
Flood responded with a RBI single, which had Pittsburgh manager Danny Murtaugh bringing Tom Butters to the mound.
Butters would face only three hitters as Brock had a RBI double, Groat walked and Boyer added a two-run single and St. Louis led 6-0.
Joe Gibbon was next from the Pittsburgh bullpen and while he was able to end the frame, he surrendered a RBI double by White, a two-run double by Javier and a single by McCarver that drove home the final tally.
Al McBean worked a perfect eighth for Pittsburgh, but the damage was already done. Friend (0-1) gave up five runs on seven hits as he was tagged with the loss.
