Editor’s note: The 1964 Tournament games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available.
The 1964 baseball season featured two of the closest pennant races with several teams involved during the final week as the St. Louis Cardinals won the National League after by trailing by 11 games in late August.
In a single elimination format, there are many teams capable of winning the title.
After the Cardinals in the NL, the Philadelphia Phillies, Cincinnati Reds, San Francisco Giants and Milwaukee Braves all finished within five games of first place.
On the American League side, the New York Yankees led all of baseball with 99 wins. The Chicago White Sox (98) and the Baltimore Orioles (97) both won more than the Cardinals, who finished with 93 victories.
St. Louis had the NL Most Valuable Player in Ken Boyer, but all of the other post-season awards went to guys from teams that didn’t make it to the World Series.
Baltimore’s Brooks Robinson was the AL MVP, while Dean Chance of the Los Angeles Angels won the major league Cy Young Award.
The Rookies of the Year were Dick Allen of the Phillies in the NL and Tony Oliva of the Minnesota Twins in the AL.
