The Washington Senators survived a trip to Fenway Park to post a 5-4 victory in the final contest in the opening round of the 1964 Tournament.

Boston loaded the bases in the eight and ninth with just one run scoring, which enabled Washington to move on to the second round as the Senators visit the Chicago White Sox.

Leading 5-3 with two outs in the eighth, Washington starter Claude Osteen gave up a solo homer to pinch-hitter Felix Mantilla.

After the long ball, Dalton Jones and Tony Conigliaro singled. Osteen appeared to be out of trouble when Carl Yastrzemski hit a grounder to Don Blasingame, but the second baseman booted the ball and the bases were loaded.

Steve Ridzik was called from the bullpen by Senators manager Gil Hodges to face Dick Stuart. The Washington reliever fanned the Boston first baseman to end the threat.

Boston’s Dick Radatz shut down the Senators in the top of the ninth to set the stage for a wild bottom of the inning.

Washington closer Kline retired the first two hitters before Eddie Bressoud, Bob Tillman and pinch-hitter Russ Nixon each singled to jam the bases.

Unfortunatley for Boston, Jones followed by hitting a routine fly ball to Washington centerfielder Don Lock for the final out as Kline held on for a save.

Leaving with two outs in the eighth, Osteen (1-0) got the win as he surrendered six hits with a walk and five strikeouts.

Boston Leads Early

Stuart had Fenway’s crowd going crazy in the first inning as he smaked a homer off Osteen over the Green Monster to give the Red Sox a 2-0 advantage.

Three solo homers by Washington of Boston starter Bill Monbouquette gave the Senators a 3-2 lead.

Blasingame hit one in the third before Lock blasted one in the fourth and another in the sixth.

Washington added to its margin with two runs in the top of the eighth.

Back-to-back doubles by Blasingame and John Kennedy ended the day for Monbouquette (0-1), who would tagged with the loss as he allowed all five runs on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Arnold Earley gave up a RBI single to Chuck Hinton for Washington’s final tally before he got the next three outs to end the inning.
