Detroit pitcher Dave Wickersham may not have recorded the shutout he wanted, but the Tigers were able to post a 7-2 road victory over the Baltimore Orioles in the second round of the 1964 Tournament.
Next up for the Tigers is a visit to Chicago for a quarterfinal contest against the White Sox.
A tired Wickersham (1-0) left with one out in the bottom of the ninth after losing his shutout thanks to a two-run homer from Brooks Robinson. Fred Gladding finished up on the mound for the Tigers.
The offense for Detroit scored in the first inning against Baltimore starter Milt Pappas as Jerry Lumpe smacked a two-run homer.
The Tigers added to their lead in the fourth and fifth.
Don Wert had a two-run single in the fourth, while Bill Freehan and Dick McAuliffe drove runners home with hits in the fifth.
Detroit’s final tally came in the ninth when Sam Jones walked Wickersham with the bases loaded.
Pappas (0-1) gave up four runs on seven hits with a walk and a strikeout by the time he hit the showers with one out in the fourth.
Steve Barber got the last two outs in the fourth before surrendering the two runs in the fifth. Harvey Haddix tossed three scoreless frames before being relieved by Jones.
