Home runs provided all of the offense as the Detroit Tigers beat the New York Yankees 2-1 to reach the championship contest of the 1964 Tournament.
The Tigers are set to entertain the Milwaukee Braves in the title tilt.
Bill Freehan gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth against New York starter Al Downing with a two-run blast that scored Gates Brown who led off the frame with a single.
New York’s tally came in the eighth as Mickey Mantle drilled a solo shot, which was his third hit of the affair.
Hank Aguirre (1-0) tossed a complete game for the Tigers as he scattered nine hits with a walk and six strikeouts.
The Yankees only had one serious threat against Aguirre as they loaded the bases in the fourth with one out.
Aguirre retired Elston Howard on a popout and ended the uprising by getting Clete Boyer to ground out.
Downing (0-1) left in the top of the ninth after allowing two runners to reach. He gave up five hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
Pete Mikkelsen got Norm Cash, Don Demeter and Brown to all ground out to second to end the inning.
Aguirre gave up a pinch-hit in the bottom of the ninth to Hector Lopez, but that’s all the Yankees could muster as the Tigers celebrated the victory.
