BALTIMORE, Md. – Two touchdowns in the first quarter made the difference for Dallas.
The Cowboys built on the early advantage to defeat the Baltimore Colts 34-21 at Memorial Stadium in the 1967 Strat-o-Matic Football Tournament.
After the opening kickoff, a 16-play Dallas drive that went 80 yards was capped by Don Meredith‘s scoring pass to Lance Rentzel from 10 yards out with 7:30 left in the first period.
It didn’t take long for the Cowboys to return to the end zone.
Baltimore’s Lenny Moore grabbed the ensuing kickoff at the 8-yard line and went 10 yards before getting hit by Phil Clark. Moore’s fumble was recovered by Dick Daniels.
Dallas needed just three plays to go 18 yards as the Cowboys took a 14-0 lead.
Meredith hit Pete Gent with a 14-yard touchdown pass with 6:15 remaining in the opening quarter.
In the second stanza, the Cowboys added to their lead with a pair of field goals by Danny Villanueva from 14 and 23 yards.
The Cowboys picked up where they left off at halftime as the third quarter began.
The Colts found some success as Alvin Haymond returned the kick 28 yards to the Baltimore 29-yard line.
Tony Lorick ran 15 yards on the first play to get the Colts moving. Unfortunately for Baltimore, three plays later the Colts were forced to punt.
David Lee‘s 39-yard boot was taken by Dallas return man Bob Hayes, who raced 88-yards for a touchdown at the 13:15 mark as the Cowboys led 27-0.
The Colts were able to score twice during the rest of the third period to close the gap to 27-14.
Tom Matte had the first touchdown on a 4-yard run, while Johnny Unitas hooked up with Raymond Berry on a 32-yard pass for the other score.
Both teams scored touchdowns in the final quarter.
Walt Garrison ran for an 8-yard score for the Cowboys, while Moore added in the last score on a 1-yard dive.
Garrison led the Cowboys with 60 yards on the ground on 21 carries.
Meredith completed 17-of-26 passes for 213 yards and two scores. Hayes topped the Cowboys with four grabs for 47 yards.
For the Colts, Lorick had 38 yards on eight attempts.
Unitas was 15-23 for 177 yards, a touchdown and a pair of interceptions. John Mackey caught eight passes for 92 yards.
Defensively, Mel Renfro led Dallas with eight tackles. Bob Lilly had two sacks. Mike Johnson and Mike Gaechter both picked off passes from Unitas.
Billy Ray Smith led the Colts with six stops, while Bubba Smith had five tackles and a sack.
The Cowboys advance to the NFL Championship contest that will be in Los Angeles or Green Bay.
