GREEN BAY, Wisc. – Green Bay will now welcome Dallas to Lambeau Field for the NFL title contest as the Packers beat the Los Angeles Rams 28-10 in the opening round of the 1967 Strat-o-Matic Football Tournament.
After a first quarter dominated by defense, Green Bay was able to break through with a pair of touchdowns to take a 14-0 halftime lead.
Packers quarterback Bart Starr threw an interception on the initial drive by Green Bay. The Packers offense couldn’t get going and they had to punt on their next two possessions.
Early in the second period, a fumble recovery turned the game around for the Packers.
The Rams had a first and goal from the 4-yard line when Tommy Mason was nailed by Jim Weatherwax for no gain as the ball fell to the ground. Weatherwax fell on the loose ball and the Rams were denied to first score of the contest.
The Packers took advantage of the momentum swing to put together a nine-play drive that covered 96 yards and ended with a 2-yard run by Jim Grabowski with 13:00 remaining in the half.
Late in the second stanza, the Packers couldn’t convert another scoring chance as Don Chandler missed a 23-yard field goal.
However, the Rams failed on their five possessions and the situation got worse on the sixth.
Herb Adderley intercepted a Roman Gabriel pass and raced 24 yards to the end zone with 3:15 left.
Gabriel was picked off again at the start of the third quarter.
This time it was Lee Roy Caffey, who grabbed the errant toss allowing the Packers to take over 33 yards from paydirt.
Five plays later, Travis Williams gave the Packers a 21-0 lead at the 10:00 mark.
Los Angeles was able to respond to close the gap with a 12-yard touchdown run by Les Josephson later in the third.
Bruce Gossett added a 21-yard field goal for the Rams at the start of the fourth to make it 21-10.
On Green bay’s next possession, Starr had a 1-yard dive into the end zone to complete an 8-play, 66-yard drive.
Elijah Pitts led the Packers ground attack with 72 yards in 16 attempts.
Starr completed 12-of-21 throws for 130 yards with two interceptions. Boyd Dowler had five catches for 60 yards.
For the Rams, Gabriel was 13-of-26 for 127 yards with three picks.
Josephson was the top offensive performer for the Rams with 79 yards rushing in 13 carries, while catching three passes for 40 yards. Jack Snow also had three receptions for 43 yards.
Defensively for the Packers, Willie Wood had six tackles. Ray Nitschke and Ron Kostelnik had five each.
Willie Davis had two sacks with Adderley adding another interception in the second half.
Merlin Olsen, Irv Cross and Maxie Baughan led the Rams with six tackles apiece.
Chuck Lamson intercepted a pair of Starr passes, while Deacon Jones had a sack.
