Gaylord Perry pitched and hit the San Francisco Giants into the semifinals.
The Giants beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 2-1 to claim the National League West Bracket of the 1969 Strat-o-Matic Tournament
With the victory, San Francisco entertains the Pittsburgh Pirates in a semifinal contest at Candlestick Park.
Perry (1-0) allowed eight hits in his complete game effort with a walk and a pair of strikeouts, while working out of a bases-loaded jam in the second inning.
At the plate, Perry drove in both runs for the Giants in the bottom of the fourth frame off Los Angeles starter Don Sutton.
Ken Henderson led off with a single and moved to third as Dick Dietz reached on a two-base error by Dodgers rightfielder Andy Kosco.
After Hal Lanier‘s fly ball to centerfield wasn’t deep enough to score a run, Perry smacked a single that gave the Giants a 2-0 advantage.
Los Angeles scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh.
Ted Sizemore doubled with one out. Pinch-hitter Manny Mota hit a grounder to Giants second baseman Ron Hunt, who misplayed the ball allowing Sizemore to reach third.
Maury Wills hit a sacrifice fly and Los Angeles trailed by one, but the Dodgers weren’t able to produce a run the rest of the way against Perry.
Sutton (0-1) took the loss for the Dodgers as he tossed six innings giving up six hits with a walk and eight strikeouts. Pete Mikkelsen worked the final two frames for the Dodgers.
