Tom Seaver made one swing by Donn Clendenon stand up as the New York Mets beat the Philadelphia Phillies 1-0 in the second round in the 1969 Strat-o-Matic Tournament.
Seaver (1-0) tossed a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts as the Mets advanced to the finale of the National League East Bracket to face the winner of the Pittsburgh Pirates at Chicago Cubs.
Clendenon drilled a solo homer off Philadelphia starter Grant Jackson in the second inning. He also added a double in the fourth.
Jackson (0-1) perhaps deserved a better fate than getting tagged with the loss as he allowed four hits in seven innings with a walk and six strikeouts.
Billy Champion gave up a single to Tommie Agee in the eighth, but he induced Bud Harrelson to it into a double play in the eighth.
In the ninth, Seaver had his most difficult inning. Seaver hit Tony Taylor, but got John Briggs to hit into a fielder’s choice.
Seaver then walked his only batter of the affair as Dick Allen reached. However, Seaver had an answer for the Phillies hopes as he ended the game by striking out Johnny Callison and Larry Hisle.
Jerry Grote and Cleon Jones both singled for New York’s other hits.
For the Phillies, Cookie Rojas had a double in the second as Callison had a single in the fourth and Taylor added a single in the sixth.
