1969 Tournament: Yankees at Senators

Editor’s note: Tournament games are played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. Three-man pitching rotations will be used for starting pitchers. Injuries are in-game only during this single elimination event.

Dick Bosman tossed a five-hitter as the Washington Senators defeated the New York Yankees 7-1 in the first round of the 1969 Strat-o-Matic Tournament.

With the win, the Senators advance to the second round as they visit the Baltimore Orioles.

Bosman (1-0) didn’t allow a hit until Jimmie Hall had a single in the fourth inning. New York’s only tally came on a RBI double by Horace Clarke in the seventh inning after the Senators had built a four-run advantage.

The Washington righty fanned five in his complete game effort, while walking three. The three free passes all came in the second inning as the Yankees loaded the bases before Bosman retired Jerry Kenney on a pop out and Bobby Murcer on a grounder.

Mike Epstein and Ken McMullen had back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the second to score the first run against New York starter Mel Stottlemyre.

McMullen would later score on a RBI single by Paul Casanova to make it 2-0 after two frames.

Epstein blasted a solo homer in the fourth before Stottlemyre’s day came to an end in the sixth.

Stottlemyre (0-1) gave up three straight hits including a RBI single to Bernie Allen as the Senators led 4-0. The New York hurler had four strikeouts and three walks as he would be tagged with the loss.

New York reliever Jack Aker faced two batters as he got the Yankees out of the inning as Casanova hit into a double play and Bosman had a fly ball to left.

Washington added three runs in the eighth against Al Downing. Allen had a two-run triple and Ed Brinkman added the final score with a single.
