A solo homer by Ray Fosse proved to be the difference as the 1972 Cleveland Indians defeated the 1972 Philadelphia Philles 1-0 in the opening round of the 1970s Cy Young Tournament.
Fosse’s blast in the top of the eighth stunned Philadelphia starter Steve Carlton and the Veteran’s Stadium crowd.
Up to that point entering the eighth, Carlton had allowed two hits with both runners being erased on a double play as he had faced the minimun of 21 batters.
Carlton (0-1) would finish the affair surrendering four hits with a walk and six strikeouts.
Gaylord Perry (1-0) gave up six hits and never had more than one runner on base at anytime. Perry fanned seven and didn’t walk a batter.
With the win, the Indians are scheduled to travel in the second round to the winner of the 1976 San Diego Padres at 1977 New York Yankees contest.
