Jim Wynn may be known as the Toy Cannon, but he wasn’t playing around as the 1974 Los Angeles Dodgers beat the 1974 Oakland A’s 8-3 in the opening round of the 1970s Cy Young Tournament.

Wynn hit a pair of homers and drove in four runs for Los Angeles as the Dodgers advanced to the second round to face the 1973 New York Mets on the road in Shea Stadium.

With Los Angeles trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth against A’s starter Catfish Hunter, the Dodgers went to work.

Steve Yeager led off with a walk before Hunter retired Bill Russell and Davey Lopes.

Bill Buckner extended the inning with a single to set up Wynn for a three-run blast that put the Dodgers on top 5-3.

In the seventh, Wynn added a solo homer to make it 6-3.

Rollie Fingers took over on the mound for the A’s in the eighth and he got tagged for a two-run homer by Joe Ferguson for the final runs of the contest.

The A’s jumped on Los Angeles starter Mike Marshall in the first inning as Sal Bando had a RBI single and Reggie Jackson had a sacrifice fly.

Los Angeles tied the affair in the second as Ron Cey smacked a two-run homer as the Dodgers would go on to score all of their runs via the long ball.

Oakland took a 3-2 lead in the third with an unearned run. Jackson singled, stole second and scored when Russell had a two-base error on a grounder by Gene Tenace.

Marshall (1-0) went the distance for the Dodgers allowing three hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

Hunter (0-1) worked seven innings giving up seven hits with four walks and five strikeouts.
