1970s Cy Young Tournament: 78 Yankees at 71 Cubs

Editor’s note: Tournament games are played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. Each of the Cy Young winners will start every game with a maximum of 10 innings. The designated hitter is being used. Injuries are in-game only during this single elimination event.

A solo homer by Johnny Callison provided a boost for the 1971 Chicago Cubs in a 4-2 victory over the 1978 New York Yankees in the 1970s Cy Young Tournament.

With the win, Chicago advances to the semifinals as the Cubs are set to entertain the 1979 Baltimore Orioles.

The game was tied at 2-2 when Callison smacked his shot leading off the bottom of the seventh against New York starter Ron Guidry.

Later in the frame, Don Kessinger added a RBI single that drove in the final tally of the affair.

Fergie Jenkins (2-0) went thee distance for the Cubs allowing eight hits with a walk and six strikeouts.

Guidry (1-1) end up working seven innings giving up eight hits with four strikeouts. Rich Gossage tossed a scoreless eighth for the Yankees.

It only took two batters for the Yankees to grab the lead in the first inning against Jenkins.

Mickey Rivers singled, stole second and scored on a single by Roy White.

White added a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth to put New York in front 2-0.

Chicago answered in the bottom of the fifth to tied the game at 2-2.

Callison led off with a double before Brock Davis reached on an error by Guidry to put runners and second an third.

Chris Cannizzaro grounded out to bring Callison home before Glenn Beckert singled to tie it as Davis scored.
