Ron Guidry tossed a four-hitter as the 1978 New York Yankees defeated the 1978 San Diego Padres in the opening round of the 1970s Cy Young Tournament.
With the win, New York Yankees will head to Chicago as they visit the Cubs and Wrigley Field in the second round.
Guidry (1-0) gave up a lead-off double to Gene Richards in the first inning and then walked Ozzie Smith before he retired the next three hitters to end the threat.
The Padres didn’t have a better opportunity the rest of the way.
After Derrel Thomas doubled in the second, Richards had a single in the third before he was thrown out nu New York catcher Thurman Munson trying to steal second.
San Diego’s final hit came in the fifth as Bill Almon singled. Munson also took care of him as he tried to swipe second.
Richards was San Diego’s only other base runner from that point as he walked leading off in the ninth. After Richards stole second, Guidry got the final three outs to earn the complete game victory with two walks and eight strikeouts.
San Diego starter Gaylord Perry didn’t surrender a run until the sixth inning. Doubles by Munson and Lou Piniella produced the first tally for the Yankees against Perry.
New York added its final run in the eighth as Perry’s day came to an end as Roy White and Munson singled to begin the frame.
Rollie Fingers took over for Perry and allowed a RBI single by Reggie Jackson before the San Diego bullpen ace was able to work out of the jam and finish the affair.
Perry (0-1) was tagged with the loss allowing five hits in seven innings with three walks and three strikeouts.
