This time, Kelly’s single gave Baltimore a 3-2 win over the 1970 Minnesota Twins as the Orioles advanced to the semifinals to face the winner of the 1978 New York Yankees at 1971 Chicago Cubs.
With the score tied at 2-2 and one out in the top of the ninth, John Lowenstein drilled a triple off Twins starter Jim Perry.
Kelly followed with what turned out to be the game-winning single as the Orioles took the lead.
Baltimore starter Mike Flanagan finished off the Twins in the bottom of the ninth by fanning Harmon Killebrew, Brant Alyea and Rich Reese.
Flanagan (1-0) allowed four hits with four walks and six strikeouts in his complete game effort.
Perry (1-1) also went the distance for the Twins surrendering six hits with a walk and seven strikeouts.
Back-to-back solo homers produced all of the other runs for both teams.
In the second, Lowenstein and Kelly tagged Perry as the Orioles gained a 2-0 advantage.
The Twins responded in the third as Cesar Tovar led off with a blast before Rod Carew followed with his shot that tied the affair at 2-2.
