1970s Cy Young Tournament: 79 Orioles at 79 Cubs

Editor’s note: Tournament games are played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. Each of the Cy Young winners will start every game with a maximum of 10 innings. The designated hitter is being used. Injuries are in-game only during this single elimination event.

Pat Kelly had just two hits for the 1979 Baltimore Orioles, but they proved to be the difference as he led his team to a 5-3 victory in 13 innings over the 1979 Chicago Cubs in the opening round of the 1970s Cy Young Tournament.

With the win, the Orioles visit the 1970 Minnesota Twins for a second round affair.

John Lowenstein began the top of the 13th with a single off Cubs reliever Dick Tidrow. Kelly followed with his second homer of the day, which was a two-run blast that gave the Orioles the lead.

Tidrow (0-1) had his day end after he retired Doug DeCinces and Rich Dauer singled. Donnie Moore game on and got a double play to end the inning.

In the bottom of the 13th, Don Stanhouse worked a perfect frame for Baltimore manager Earl Weaver despite a strange amount of smoke coming from the Orioles dugout that was a distraction to many on the field.

Nicknamed “Fullpack” by his manager, Stanhouse (1-0) earned the victory tossing three innings, while giving up two hits with a walk and a strikeout.

Both starters went 10 innings before heading to the showers.

Mike Flanagan gave up six hits with a walk and six strikeouts for the Orioles.

The Cubs scored three times in the seventh to tie the contest at 3-3.

Dave Kingman singled before Jerry Martin doubled. Larry Biittner hit a grounder that allowed Kingman to score.

Steve Ontiveros smacked a two-run homer and the game was even.

Like Flanagan, Chicago starter Bruce Sutter surrendered six hits with five walks and 14 strikeouts.

The Orioles used the long ball to build a 3-0 advantage in the fourth.

Kelly hit a solo homer, while Dauer lifted a two-run shot over the fence.
