Editor’s note: Tournament games are played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. Each of the Cy Young winners will start every game with a maximum of 10 innings. The designated hitter is being used. Injuries are in-game only during this single elimination event.

Perhaps only perfection would have been better for Randy Jones.

However, the end result was perfect as the 1976 San Diego Padres won the championship game of the 1970s Cy Young Tournament with a 6-0 victory over the 1971 Chicago Cubs.

Jones (4-0) added to his tourney performance with a four-hitter against the Cubs with three walks and a pair of strikeouts. He allowed two singles by Glenn Beckert, while Joe Pepitone and Jim Hickman also singled.

Overall in the tournament, Jones had complete game shutouts in all four of his starts allowing 18 hits in 36 innings with four walks and four strikeouts.

In the title contest, the Padres scored an unearned run in the third to grab an early lead Cubs starter Fergie Jenkins.

Doug Rader singled and went to second as Cubs rightfielder Johnny Callison misplayed the ball.

Fred Kendall drove Rader home with a single before Jenkins retired the next three hitters.

In the sixth, Jenkins ran into trouble as he gave up a single to Johnny Grubb and a double to Tito Fuentes to begin the frame.

After a mound visit by Cubs manager Leo Durocher, Jenkins surrendered a RBi single to Willie Davis before a three-run homer by Dave Winfield end the pitcher’s day.

Burt Hooton came on to end the San Diego rally without another run scoring as the Padres led 5-0.

Bill Hands gave up a solo homer to Grubb that was the final San Diego tally of the contest. Juan Pizarro finished up for the Cubs with a scoreless eighth.

Jenkins (3-1) gave up five runs on seven hits in five innings with three strikeouts.
