Editor’s note: The 1970 Tournament games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. The designated hitter will be used for any games involving American League teams from 1973-79 when games are played at home. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur. For this tournament, the rules include a three-man pitching rotation using the best lineups available.
Six teams that won the World Series are set to fight it out for supremacy in a 16-team bracket of the 1970s Diamond Gems Tournament.
The tournament is not seeded and the teams were paired so those representing the same franchise would not meet until the championship game. The home team will be determined by a coin flip.
None of these teams playing in the first round met on the field in a game that actually counted. Although that it technically true, the 1975 Cincinnati Reds and 1976 Philadelphia Phillies had some interesting games of the decade. The only other matchup that would be close is the 1972 Oakland A’s and 1977 Kansas City Royals.
Which team would be the favorite? It should be an exciting for those who are fans of the 1970s teams.
