1972 Tournament: Indians at Tigers

Editor’s note: Tournament games are played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. Three-man pitching rotations will be used for starting pitchers. Injuries are in-game only during this single elimination event.

Mickey Lolich made a pair of solo homers stand up as the Detroit Tigers beat the Cleveland Indians 2-0 in the second round of the 1972 Strat-o-Matic Tournament.

With the victory, the Tigers advance to the third round to entertain the winner of the Baltimore Orioles at Boston Red Sox contest.

Lolich (1-0) allowed just two singles in the sixth inning to Frank Duffy and Buddy Bell. The lefty fanned five, while walking two and hitting a batter.

The Detroit starter was perfect through four innings when he walked Graig Nettles and Tommy McCraw with one out. Loloci got Del Unser to hit into a double play to end the threat.

Cleveland starter Dick Tidrow was also effective in his eight frames on the mound, but Detroit got all of the offense that was needed in the first inning as Al Kaline and Willie Horton smashed solo shots for the only runs of the affair.

Tidrow (0-1) gave up six hits with four strikeouts.

Joe Coleman is scheduled to start for the Tigers against Baltimore or Boston in the third round.
