1975 Reds Replay 108: 1981 Dodgers

Editor’s note: How good were the 1975 Cincinnati Reds? The best way to end the speculation is to challenge the team with a 162-game season against some great teams. This is a series that will include each game played with the Strat-o-Matic cards and dice, while hoping to reach the 108-54 record that the Reds had that season. Game stories will be published periodically on Press Room Pass through out the year. What’s your predicted victory total?

Don Gullett‘s domination of the Los Angeles Dodgers continues.

The Cincinnati lefty allowed two hits as he won for the fourth time against the Dodgers this season in a 5-0 victory over Los Angeles.

Gullett (15-4) fanned three in the complete game with Pedro Guerrero getting a single in the second inning, while pinch-hitter Rick Monday also singled in the eighth.

Los Angeles starter Fernando Valenzuela surrendered four runs on six hits with five strikeouts in five innings as he lost for the fourth straight time to the Reds.

Tony Perez hit a solo homer in the second to give the Reds an early 1-0 advantage.

Cesar Geronimo‘s RBI single in the fourth put the Reds in front 2-0.

Joe Morgan doubled the lead with a two-run blast in the fourth.

Cincinnati’s final tally came on a run-scoring single by George Foster in the seventh off Bobby Castillo, who tossed three frames for the Dodgers. Dave Stewart worked the ninth.

Gary Nolan (11-6) will start for the Reds in the middle contest of the three-game series at Dodger Stadium, while Jerry Reuss gets the ball for Los Angeles.
